University at Albany and INICIA Educación Launch New Partnership to Help Build the Educational Capacity of the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and Albany, NY (August 24, 2016) - To aid in building the educational capacity of the Dominican Republic, the University at Albany-SUNY (UAlbany) announces a new partnership between its Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies (EAPS) in the School of Education, a national leader in global education studies, and INICIA Educación, a premier educational foundation in the Dominican Republic.

INICIA bannerA core component of this partnership is the establishment of a competitive scholarship for Dominican students to attend UAlbany to pursue advanced study of educational policy, policy analysis and the evaluation of educational programs and projects.

This first step is considered extremely relevant by INICIA Educación in light of recent developments in Dominican educational policy, including the recently established “Pacto Educativo” (National Education Pact) which is an important national agreement on policy priorities for education that includes all political parties and the key civil society organizations in the Dominican Republic.

The partnership builds on the work of Dr. Gilbert Valverde, associate professor in EAPS, and UAlbany alumna Dr. Ancell Scheker Mendoza, director general of evaluation of educational quality in the Dominican Ministry of Education, who will jointly supervise the work of the students. Dr. Valverde commented, “The establishment of this special competitive scholarship for Dominicans to pursue their advanced study with EAPS is an important component of enhancing the educational policy environment in the Dominican Republic.”

“New York hosts the largest population of Dominicans in the United States, making this an important cultural and educational partnership for both the Dominican Republic and the University at Albany. It builds on the strong ties that the State University of New York has with the entire Caribbean region,” said Dr. Jason E. Lane, chair of the department.

With a Caribbean Diaspora population of approximately 6 million people in the US, one third of whom reside in the NYC metro area, the Caribbean region is an important source of immigrants to New York State. This cultural significance, along with proximity, and affordability, make for interesting opportunities for educational as well as research collaboration.

The first INICIA Scholar will arrive at EAPS in Fall 2017.
