Oliveira Honored With Early Career Research Award
Albany, NY (March 31, 2013) - Alandeom W. Oliveira, Educational Theory and Practice, has been selected as recipient of the 2013 Early Career Research Award from the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST).
The Early Career Research Award is given annually to a researcher who, within seven years of earning a doctoral degree, “demonstrates the greatest potential to make outstanding and continuing contributions to research in science education.” Oliveira will be presented with the award at the NARST annual international conference in Puerto Rico in April.
Oliveira’s research interests include cooperative science learning; children’s books; inquiry-based teaching; curriculum translation practices; classroom discourse; and language use. He is currently Co-PI on a $1.8 million U.S. Department of Education professional development project for secondary educators. The project centers on data-driven strategies for instructing English Language Learners in the academic content areas, specifically science and mathematics via technology-enhanced classroom communication.
Since 1928, the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) has promoted research in science education and the communication of knowledge generated by research. The ultimate goal of NARST is to help all learners achieve science literacy. NARST promotes this goal by: 1) encouraging and supporting the application of diverse research methods and theoretical perspectives from multiple disciplines to the investigation of teaching and learning in science; 2) communicating science education research findings to researchers, practitioners, and policy makers; and 3) cooperating with other educational and scientific societies to influence educational policies.
