Business Incubator
The East Campus’ Biotech
Business Incubator
 Incubator Overview
The East Campus' high-tech business incubator occupies one of the four wings
of the main 384,000 square foot research building. Current tenants include bioscience,
chemical, and nanotech companies. The main attractions of the incubator include its
proximity to the resources on the East Campus
, and in particular, the staff and equipment at the
Center for Functional Genomics (CFG), which give tenants fee-for-service access to
essential research services.
The unique coupling of a business incubator and the CFG's core technology centers;
the highly affordable cost of living in the Capital Region; its proximity to New York City and
Boston; and the input of top bioscience researchers at the State University
(www.albany.edu/cancergenomics/) and nearby institutions make the East Campus
an ideal place for start-up companies to locate and conduct research.
The incubator also offers updated laboratory space, office space, conference facilities,
and support services including reception and access to standard office equipment such as
photocopiers and fax machines.
We also have a monthly mentoring workshop for bioscience entrepreneurs and inventors. Utilities are included in each tenant's rent. Rental rates
vary based on location within the building and amenities but all rates are extremely competitive.

Associate East Campus Operations Manager, for specific quotes and inquiries.
Core Facility: The Center for Functional Genomics
The CFG is a University-based fee-for-service laboratory services provider
with hundreds of clients from around the world from major research
institutions, government agencies, scientific organizations, and commercial
companies. The CFG offers incubator tenants state-of-the-art equipment
and expert staff members who provide research services - such as mass spectrometry,
gene expression analysis, transgenic mouse creation, cell sorting, and DNA sequencing, etc.
As part of a University system, its stated mission is to support
the growth of the bioscience sector by offering all the expertise and
technologies a bioscience researcher needs to perform biotechnological
research or analysis. The CFG's extensive laboratory services are a
solution to the logistical and resource allocation problems start-up
companies face whenever they're in need of doing a project on time and with
a high degree of quality. The CFG ensures that bioscience research can get
done affordably, quickly, and with the expertise needed to produce
reproducible, accurate results. All one needs to do is send the CFG a work
order or sample to work with, and they'll do the rest.
Business Support
All tenants have access to the University at Albany's
Small Business Development Center --the premier business assistance organization in New York State. The SBDC is a joint venture with the University at Albany, the Small Business Administration and the State of New York located at the University's Harriman campus. The SBDC provides free expert assistance with business plan development and related business management needs. Full-time professional SBDC business advisers, with the knowledge and experience to provide entrepreneurs with expert counseling and training, staff each SBDC regional center. These advisers undergo rigorous professional certification to keep their business knowledge up-to-the-minute and their counseling skills sharp.
Scientific Focus Group
We also have a focus group composed of scientists from
the Center who are available to review and provide feedback
on new product ideas. This allows our incubator tenants
to obtain important customer feedback as they refine
their business plans.
Tech Transfer Expertise
Through the University, the CFG also offers access to
experienced technology transfer experts who can advise
on appropriate IP strategies for commercializing a given
technology.
Tech Valley Incubator Network
As a founding member of the Tech Valley Incubator Network,
the East Campus Incubator cooperates with other area
incubators to provide entrepreneurs with comprehensive
legal, business, technical, training and business-related
support services
