Alum of the Week

Helen Jolly graduated in 2002 with a double major in Anthropology and East Asian Studies. After doing local archeological work for a year, she entered the Peace Corps and was stationed in Guatemala, where she taught animal husbandry in many shapes and forms. She lived in Chichicastenango and worked with CARE, which has projects all over the world. She also took classes in the local indigenous K´iche language. Currently she is enrolled in the Interdepartmental Program in Anthropological Sciences at SUNY Stony Brook. She writes, "I am amazed to be starting school at Stony Brook, it's one of the best PhD programs for anthropology in the nation, but highly specialized in morphology and primate behavior. ...
my course of study is cultural anthropology with a focus on ecology. Ultimately I want to explore power relations and the interaction of nongovernmental and aid organizations with indigenous populations of the third world, most likely with a focus on Latin America."
