Course Description
The course covers a solid foundation in four basic language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
Classroom activities and homework assignments help students achieve a practical command of the language.
We will study the rest of ようこそ Ch-5,Ch-6 and Ch7.

Expectations
1. Students are expected to review the materials (grammar, vocabulary, kanji etc.) covered in class, everyday, along with doing assigned homework.
2. Classes are designed to help you learn to speak, read, write and understand Japanese through use of the language in communicative situations. Active participation in class activities is necessary.
3. This course will be conducted entirely in Japanese. Students will be expected to use Japanese as much as possible in the classroom and instructor’s office.
4. Announcements are usually made at the beginning of class. It is your responsibility to get information during class; therefore it is very important to come to class on time.
5.
Taking notes is required during
class.
6.
Students will be expected to
perform at the 300 level for all work associated with this class, both inside
and outside the classroom.
Attendance Policy and Penalty
1.
No extra work can make up for absences.
2.
Absences are excused only if written notes on an institutional
stationary are provided.
3.
One grade lower for more than 3
inexcusable absences. Two grade lower for more than 5 inexcusable absences. One full letter grade lower for more than 7 inexcusable absences. Additional one
grade lower for every 2 times of inexcusable absences after 8.
4.
When you come late, report it to the instructor at the end of the class
on that day. OTHERWISE YOU ARE CONSIDERED ABSENT. Two times of being late for more than 15 minutes will equal one day absence. Being late for more than half
the class time will equal one day absence.

Participation/Performance………..10%
The instructor will
evaluate daily classroom participation. Full credit will be given to those who
are present the entire class and fully participate. Participation in class discussion
will be a major part of this grade.

Chapter テスト&クイズ………..25%
There will be 3
Chapter Tests, 2 Reading assignment Quizzes and 2 Kanji Tests.

Homework………5%
Homework assignments
and due dates will be announced in class. In order to receive full credit, each
assignment must be completed fully and carefully by the due time. The instructor will collect
homework at the beginning of class. The
instructor will not accept
incomplete assignments and students are not allowed to hand in homework at the end
of the class.
Assignments that are
one day late will be reduced by one grade.
Assignments overdue by more than one day will receive a minimum grade of
D (70% of the score for the assignment). Homework that is overdue by more than a
week will only be acceptable with consent of the instructor.
4.
作文(さくぶん)………..15%
To improve writing skills, 4さくぶんwill be assigned. Students will be required to use new vocabulary and grammar
from each new chapter. Students are required to use as much kanji as possible. The structure of さくぶん will be instructed in class.
作文 1 私の夏休み one page (400字)
作文 2 人生とキャリアone and half pages(600字)
作文 3 コミニュケーションとメディアone and half pages(600字)
作文 4 自然と文化one and half pages(600字)
5. スピーチ/プレゼンテーション……….5%
There is one スピーチ/プレゼンテーション in this course. Students will be allowed to
use one of 作文2.3.&4 for their speech martial or write a new スピーチ/プレゼンテーション for this assignment.
5.
スキット………..5%
There are three skits
in this course. Two short, two person conversations skits (students work by themselves
to makes their own skits) with a minimum of 12 sentences, and one final skit,
with a partner, with a minimum of 20 sentences. Each skit requires using of new
vocabularies and new grammar structure.
Dates for drafts of these assignments will be announced.
6.ファイナル…………30%
リスニングテストは12月8日金曜日です。Grammar final examination date will be
announced during class.
ATTENTION!
1. NO Cheating/Plagiarizing.
2. NO Make-up Tests and Quizzes without instructor permission.
3. NO Make-up for absents.
4. NO Eating in classroom.
5. NO Chattering in during lectures.
6.
Students are strongly encouraged to use office hour appointments for additional
help.
