Basic Environmental Health Program
Basic Concepts in Pest Management
(EH 105A)
This half-day course will address the basic concepts of effective pest management
Objectives
-
Learn about integrated pest management (IPM), its operational components, and how it differs from typical pest control

Identify the primary species of rats and mice, and other species of public health concern

Understand the biology and behavioral ecology of commensal rodents, including the signs of rodent activity and why commensal rodents are generally able to thrive among humans

Understand public health and other impacts of common rodents

Understand the basics of educational, legal/regulatory, habitat modification, biological, mechanical, and chemical interventions, their advantages and limitations, and appropriate utilization in developing an IPM strategy for managing commensal rodents
First priority for this course is given to local and state health department personnel who are required to take the BEHP. Second priority is given to individuals registered for the Foundations of Public Health Practice certificate program. Other public health staff may register on a space-available basis.
