Basic Environmental Health Program Foundations of Public Health Practice

Public Health Microbiology* (PH 103A)

After attending this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Recognize the routes of human exposures by various forms of microorganisms.
• State at least one pathogenic disease associated with each of the following organisms: bacteria, virus, protozoa, and helminthes.
• List 5 diseases that are waterborne and their etiology, and describe what barriers are used to prevent disease transmission
• List 5 diseases that are foodborne and their etiology and describe what barriers are used to prevent disease transmission.
• Describe limitations and difficulties encountered in direct testing of pathogens.
• Identify an indicator organism in drinking water and 5 characteristics that make it a good indicator.

First priority for this course is given to local and state health department personnel who are required to take the BEHP. Second priority is given to individuals registered for the Foundations of Public Health Practice certificate program. Other public health staff may register on a space-available basis.
