Basic Environmental Health Program

Introduction To Public Health In New York State (PH 101)

This course covers the following topics:

  • A brief history of public health including the Great Sanitary Awakening
  • Overview of modern public health and determinants of health
  • Definition of public health and introduction to 10 essential services
  • Organizational structure of Public and Environmental Health at the federal, state and local levels
  • Legal aspects of public health; exercise to discuss public health vs. personal freedoms
  • Introduction to ethics; interactive exercises to highlight conflicts public and environmental health professionals may face
  • Overview of confidentiality and emergency preparedness

This course has an online pre-requisite:
Orientation to Public Health

First priority for this course is given to local and state health department personnel who are required to take the BEHP. Second priority is given to individuals registered for the Foundations of Public Health Practice certificate program. Other public health staff may register on a space-available basis.
