Basic Environmental Health Program (BEHP)
The Basic Environmental Health Program (BEHP) is made up of live training, online courses, as well as field exercises.
Registration for Fall 2008 is now closed.
The BEHP consists of a series of courses. These courses are:
First priority for these courses is given to local and state health department personnel who are required to take the BEHP. Second priority is given to individuals registered for the Foundations of Public Health Practice certificate program. Other public health staff may register
on a space-available basis.
Registration–Process
Please download this document to assist you in the new on-line registration process. If you do not have the ability to register through or are having problems with the on-line web site, you can register by calling the University at Albany, School of Public Health (SPH) at 518-402-0330.
Special Instructions
- Field Epidemiology (PH 102) will be waived with a transcript of an MPH or an undergraduate/graduate course in epidemiology and/or biostatistics.
- Completion of Field Epidemiology (PH 102), Public Health Microbiology (PH 103A) and Communicable Disease Control (PH 103B) are recommended before taking EH 107.
- Public Health Microbiology (PH 103A) has a prerequisite on-line course. The link is below.
- Completion of Public Health Microbiology (PH 103A) is recommended before taking Concepts of Water Supply Protection (EH 109).
- EH 107 and Water Supply Protection (EH 109) have field exercises that must be completed prior to attending the courses. These exercises can be found at the links on the right hand side of this page.
In order to receive your BEHP certificate, you must take these online courses. Please fax your certificate of completion to 518-402-1137.

This course must be completed before attending PH 101: Introduction to NYS Public Health.
Field Epidemiology
This course must be completed before attending PH103B: Communicable Disease.
Microbiology: An Introduction
This course must be completed before attending PH 103: Microbiology.

(please complete one module)
Exploring Cross-Cultural Communication
Introduction to the Incident Command System (IS 100.a)
ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents (IS 200.a)
National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction (IS 700)
If you have previously completed any of the on-line courses listed above (especially ICS 100 & 200 and NIMS 700), please submit your certificate of completion – you do not have to retake the course(s).
