Faculty and Staff
Welcome to the faculty staff page of the Disability Resource Center ( DRC) We hope the following information will be useful to you. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding students with disabilities in your classes and the academic accommodations you may need to approve/provide.
[+] Academic Accommodation Letters
[-] Academic Accommodation Letters
It is the responsibility of the student to get an academic accommodation letter to give to each of his or her professors. The student should follow the guidelines as stated in the professor’s syllabus regarding notification.
Some flexibility should be given in the notification guidelines, as some students do not register with the DRC until later in the term and are not able to provide a letter of academic accommodation at an earlier date.
Discuss with student the academic accommodation letter and how the academic accommodations will be provided or if they need to be modified to support the academic standards of the course. Professors are the person legally responsible for the provision of the academic accommodation, however the DRC is willing to assist in providing as many of the accommodation as possible, such as the space and proctors for extended time on exams in a less distracting location, the verbatim text readers and verbatim scribes for exams.

[+] Questions regarding reasonableness of academic accommodations
[-] Questions regarding reasonableness of academic accommodations
The DRC is committed to supporting the academic standards of the course and professor. The academic accommodations listed in the student’s letter are based on those that are typical of supporting particular limitations of the disability.
If at any time the professor feels the recommended academic accommodations are unreasonable, please call the DRC to discuss the suggested academic accommodation and why it may not be reasonable for that particular course.
For example, in a beginning foreign language course where the student is expected to read, write and speak the new language, a reader or scribe may not be reasonable. Some forgiveness for spelling errors might be reasonable, but this would need to be discussed and a reasonable accommodation determined, based on the standards of the course and the limitations of the disability.
[+] Reasonable Accommodation Policy
[-] Reasonable Accommodation Policy
Reasonable academic accommodations can only begin from the date the student gives the professor the letter from the DRC. If the student fails an exam because they did not think they needed any academic accommodation, then after the fact notifies the professor, the academic accommodations begin with the test following the notification.
Reasonable Accommodation Policy is available on the following web page in Word of PDF format.

The DRC is happy to meet with faculty and/or departments to discuss disability related issues from course access, accessible technology, to special needs of courses and students.
The DRC also provides workshops in Controversial issues using the NCBI model (National Coalition Building Institute) and Safe Space training to meet the needs of students on campus that are questioning their sexual identity or identifying as LBGTQQ.
