Election Awareness Unit Plan 2004 for 3rd Grade

Grade Level: Grade 3
Curriculum Objectives:
- Students will learn and understand the process of elections.
- Students will recognize political parties.
- Students will learn about the significance of voting.
- Students will better understand language and terminology associated with elections.
Library Objectives:
- Students will view, hear and interpret information from a reference source.
- Students will understand that different types of print material exist in the library.
- Students will gain awareness of dictionary, encyclopedia, newspaper and magazine articles they contain about the subject of elections.
- Students will extract relevant information from listening to a variety of sources.

Instructional Roles:
This unit involves the cooperative efforts of the Classroom Teacher, the SLMS and two U-Albany Students. The unit will occur during the 2004 Presidential Election Year, but will not be limited to only election years.
- The Classroom Teacher will introduce the unit on election to the class. Emphasis will be placed on terminology and why we vote.
- The SLMS will introduce the historical significance of voting and its importance in American Society, demonstrating the use of a variety of research tools to do so. Books read will generate discussion on elections, voting and presidents.
- Together, the classroom teacher and the SLMS will concentrate on the artistic process, discussing and providing instruction for all art projects and activities.
