ISP523L (School Library Media Specialists) worked with their Web design partners from ISP361 (Web Development) to create these Web sites that fulfill a curriculum need in a K-12 school. Problem-based project teams were formed based upon real-world, multimedia curriculum enhancement needs as requested and described by our K-12 learning partners. Students created multimedia curriculum/Web projects and actively practiced and/or played a role in the implementation and assessment of the curriculum project developed over the course of the semester. The Web developers (ISP361) then created Web sites that implement these curriculum projects, integrating their knowledge of web design principles, technical skills, and user concerns, while working with the School Library Media Specialists each week. The Web sites featured on this site are a result of that collaborative effort. |

Liz Ryan (523L) A Presidential Election Year: What a great time to educate the students about elections. This project was designed to foster an understanding for the election process to third graders. This unit focused on the significance of voting and terminology associated with elections. New York State learning standards and the Big Six Literacy skills set for libraries collaborative lessons include: literature sharing, artwork creation, electoral coin toss, a visit to a polling place and usage of technology use to enhance learning. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/elections/

Marie Connolly (523L) Our web site, The Water Cycle Mini Unit, has been prepared as a part of the Matter Unit for third grade students at Pinewood Intermediate School. The purpose of the Water Cycle Mini Unit is for students to understand the concept that while water changes states, it does not chemically change during The Water Cycle. The Web site focuses on The Water Cycle as a natural process on earth, which includes: Evaporation, Condensation, and Precipitation. The Web site also contains a quiz for students to test what they have learned and an annotated bibliography created for teachers who wish to expand their resources concerning The Water Cycle. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/water/

Chris Putnam-Pouliot (523L) Our project is a WebQuest about author Kate DiCamillo and her Newbery award winning book The Tale of Despereaux. After listening to the story, third grade students worked in groups to research topics related to the author and her book. Research groups include:
After completing their research via the WebQuest, student groups prepared informational presentations using PowerPoint software and then shared their findings with their classmates. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/katedicamillo/

Catherine Joy Taber (523L) This collaboration project created a Web site teaching fourth grade students how to use PowerPoint. By using characters to motivate the students and using simple steps, the students can easily learn how to create their own scrapbooks for a class project. The Web site was created in a linear fashion in order to be able to pick and choose where the student wants to go instead of going in sequential order. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/powerpoint/

Patrick Stevens (523L) The purpose of this project was to help fifth grade students better understand American history through music. Specific songs related to the American Revolutionary War, the Erie Canal, the American labor movement, and the push for women's suffrage have been assigned to students. Students were expected to study and research these songs and determine how they relate to the event that they were written about. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/music/

Cara Kinsey (523L) The goals of this site and the activities that accompany it were multiple. Rather than lecturing students as to what resources the Doane Stuart library contains, this adventure encouraged hands-on experience in a fun format. Students were drawn into a mystery story and then asked to be the detectives and find answers to questions. Students who already knew what the library has to offer can prove their knowledge, while students new to the library explored it in a fun way. The desired effect was for students to leave the activity informed about library basics, enthusiastic about reading, and interested in learning more and becoming more involved in the library. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/doanestuart/

Michael Nasser (361)
Tara Thibault (523L) Anthony Bender (361) In conjunction with Media Studies teacher Michelle Perpetua of Saugerties High School, this group developed a project based on the WebQuest information-seeking method created by Bernie Dodge. Focusing on the topic of teenagers as targets of major advertisers, the WebQuest is an online lesson linking to numerous resources that guides students on an analytical, critical-thinking instructional journey. Students maneuver through various pre-selected sites, forming individual opinions while attempting to view the issue of teen-focused advertising from a specific perspective. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/teensads/

Kali Nagler (523L) Our project team worked collaboratively to design an online database tutorial to entice high school students and teachers to choose school-subscribed databases over Google-type search engines when seeking information at school and at home. Our tutorial includes evaluative information of Novel, LexisNexis and Newsbank. Our assessment measured three 12th grade Social Studies classes before and after using the tutorial on their information seeking habits and interest level in using databases in the future. The rubric essentially measured the overall effectiveness our tutorial had on enhancing the targeted audience's information literacy skills. This project focused on assisting students in using various databases and providing them with information on a variety of databases so they become comfortable using resources that produce reliable and trustworthy results. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/searchthis/

Sarah Boucher (523L) The collaborative team from ISP 523, Jaclyn and Sarah developed and organized a curriculum for Mr. Winyall, the Librarian at the Hudson Falls Senior High School, for the Introduction to Information Literacy course he will be teaching in Spring 2005. They took this information along with images from the high school, and passed them on to the team from ISP 361, Chris Sytsma and Pat Keeney, who developed a Web site that houses the entire curriculum for the Information Literacy Course. Jaclyn and Sarah also created and implemented a training module for the staff at Hudson Falls on: "Finding Credible Information on the Web: Learning to Search the NOVEL Databases." Chris and Pat also posted this training module on the Web site so that together, the curriculum and the training material form a Web portal that is be available to students and staff to access for information. http://www.albany.edu/dept/sisp/jjpowers/WebCollabF04/hudsonfalls/

Maggie McCabe (523L) This Web site was created to present an overview of a semester-long project that included hands-on experiences and theoretical study to help understand the “big picture” in the processes involved in the creation of a school library media center and its services to a school community Included in this process:
