Government Support for Cross-Border Partnership:

Vietnam's First Private International University

(Entry by Prachayani Praphamontripong)

PROPHE Summary:

Vietnamese authorities approved the Bac Ha International University, the first private international university in Vietnam, to be launched in northeast of Ha Noi. Partnering with such major foreign institutions as Cambridge College and the Griffith University of Australia, the university expects to enroll 500 students in technology-related fields as well as business management in its first academic year 2007-2008 and with projections as high as 4000 over the coming years.

PROPHE Observation:

The Vietnamese case adds another example reflecting a tendency in Asia of governmental promotion for establishment of private international universities. Although both private growth and partnership with foreign institutions are often among controversial issues in developing countries due largely to the countries' history of public dominance in higher education, we are witnessing a growing stream of cross-boarder higher education and foreign penetration, often by the private sector. Previous PROPHE illustrations include Chile, Kuwait, and some Central American countries (See PROPHE Global News Reports).
