A Contribution of Private Higher Education
in Eastern Turkey
PROPHE Summary (by Hirosuke
Honda):
Private providers have been active in offering slots to high school and higher education in Eastern and Southeastern Turkey in the aftermath of the 1998 PKK terrorism. They have provided young people in such regions further education with minimal fees, allowing access for low income families. For the full story (shown with permission), see Zaman Online, January
27, 2006. "Eastern Turkey Private Educational Institutes Prove
Success," by Ismail Avci. PROPHE Observation (by Prachayani Praphamontripong): The article portrays private provision in Turkey as heroic in boosting
educational access and equity, despite the vagueness of the contents.
Neither does the article mention about educational provision and support
from the government's end. However, the Turkish example seems to partly
parallel a global trend of inexpensive private demand-absorbing institutions.
In such circumstances there is usually concern over quality. Another
perspective in such circumstances is that having a place to study may
be better than having nothing at all. |
