Pakistani Private Universities Closure due to an Illegal Operation

(Entry by Prachayani Praphamontripong)

PROPHE Summary:

Pakistani authorities have closed down three private higher education institutions for their illegal operations and substandard education provision. An official said that the District Administration would continue to act against unauthorized private institutions and that any private universities must obtain recommendation of Higher Education Commission.

For the full story, see Asia Pulse, March 27, 2006, "Islamabad Administration Closes Three Universities on HEC Directives."

PROPHE Observation:
Pakistan is another example of governmental action against private higher education institutions determined to be acting illegally (See PROPHE News Features). Issues stirring up the heat mostly relate to low academic quality provided by such institutions. The article here, however, does not offer much further detail how the authority would deal with student mobility issue once the institutions were shut down.
