Private Sector Helps Promote Pakistani Higher Education

PROPHE Summary (by Prachayani Praphamontripong)
The Pakistani government has stressed the role of private sector in promoting higher education in order to help enhance low rates of higher education enrollment and national literacy in a context of resource constraints. Research-oriented education and modern teaching methods are the prime foci of such a promotion. Notwithstanding a view that private institutions have been providing laudable services and quality education, the government will continue to monitor the performance of both private and public institutions.

For the full story see The Pakistan Newswire (Pakistan Press International), August 22, 2005, "Private sector can play vital role in promotion of education," by Sheikhupura.

PROPHE Observation (by Daniel C. Levy)

Calling upon the private sector to help achieve great enrollment increases is one of the most common themes worldwide. The article leaves unclear whether the higher education research function is also expected of private higher education. The article's worth lies in stating the government position.
