PROPHE Summary Mexican higher education institutions are aggressively
looking for opportunities for internationalization. This is more prevalent
in leading private and public institutions. CETYS University, a multi-campus
private university with three campuses in Northwest Mexico, has formed
a new partnership with City University in Washington State to enhance
opportunities for Mexican students to get Mexican and American degrees.
Undergraduate students enrolled in CETYS University can take City University
business courses during their junior and senior years. Students can study
in multiple venues. Those successfully completing the City University
course sequence will be awarded first degrees from both institutions.
A similar procedure operates for the MS in Administration.
For the full story see Yahoo News Finance Press Release coverage "City University and Mexico's CETYS Universidad Announce Partnership Conducive to Double Diplomas", February 23, 2005. PROPHE Observation Mexican private higher education institutions are very interested
in forming partnerships with US institutions. This may be especially so
for serious institutions interested in bolstering their quality, legitimacy,
and opportunities in a competitive environment. US style education is
in many aspects the paradigm for their own academic and organizational
aspirations. The double degree seems to be attractive for current and
future students and most likely will be extensively used as a marketing
strategy. Although the impact of these kinds of initiatives remain to
be seen, it will be interesting to watch and see if it can be a new trend
in private-to-private forms of partnership in the NAFTA region.
