Malaysian Private Higher Education Provision for Foreign Students

PROPHE Summary (by Prachayani Praphamontripong):

Malaysian government may withdraw the recruitment permit given to private institutions if they fail to provide accommodation to foreign students. Hostel provision is one of the governmental promotions to attract more international students studying in Malaysia, and private institutions are encouraged to cooperate with such efforts. Currently, over 100 private institutions have received the permit but some of them have not yet offered any accommodation to foreign students.

PROPHE Observation (by Daniel C. Levy):

Once again Malaysian private higher education is in the news regarding foreign students. The government wants it to help the country attract more foreign students, but insists that to do so the right way involves provisions, including for lodging. Private higher education thus faces opportunities along with threats and rules.
