Establishing New Private Universities

(Entry by Daniel C. Levy)

PROPHE Summary:
The Jordanian government is receiving applications for new private universities. The specific field specialties lie in medicine, aviation, and marine engineering.

For the full story, see Info Prod Research (middle East), June 19, 2006. "Ministry Accepting Applications for New Private Universities."

PROPHE Observation:
The government receptivity to fresh private university applications is continued evidence of the favorable official view toward private higher education and its expansion in Jordan. Favorable statements and policies have also recently been seen in nearby countries such as Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. (See prior PROPHE News Features on the region.) Striking about the new Jordanian announcement is the focus on expensive, advanced fields rather than the typical commercial fields found in private higher education.
