Jordanian Private Presence in Israel?

PROPHE Summary:
Al-Ahlivya, Amman University, Jordan's first private university (1990), reportedly wants to open an extension in Israel. The proposal, which would be evaluated by Israel's higher education council, faces opposition from Arab groups within and beyond the university.

For the full story see Albawaba Middle East News, May 31, 2004. "Report: Private Jordanian university wants to open extension in Israel."

PROPHE Observation:
Whether or not this idea becomes reality, we may be struck by the unusual political turns that sometimes arise through private higher education. Whatever its elements peculiar to its regional setting, the proposal reflects the global movement of private institutions outside their national borders. And the proposal also reflects the reality of robust private higher education emergence and growth in much of the Middle East since 1990.
