Private Universities increase enrollments in Costa Rica

(Entry by Pablo Landoni)

PROPHE Summary:

Most private universities are giving more time for students to enroll that had failed the entrance exam for public universities. The three public universities with entrance exams received 56,000 applications for 11,251 positions available. Private universities will wait until the end of the enrollment period in public universities to allow students to enter their institutions.

For the full story, see Extra Costa Rica, January 17, 2006, "Universidades privadas amplían matrícula," by Shirley Sandí.

PROPHE Observation:

Costa Rica is an example (like Brazil) of the countries that "protect" venerable public universities from massification with entrance exams. The excess of student demand moves into the private sector, which adapts providing extra time for enrollments.
