Tuition increase in Costa Rica's Private Universities

(Entry by Pablo Landoni)

PROPHE Summary:

Tuition increments go from 10 to 20% in the last year. Some universities decided to charge tuition in dollars. Due to the increases in prices, the universities are offering scholarships and loans to retain students. All 50 private universities charge tuition three times per year.

For the full story, see Nación Costa Rica, January 5, 2006, "Matrícula en 'U' privadas cuesta de ¢30.000 a ¢50.000," by Juan Fernando Lara S.

PROPHE Observation:

Private universities in Costa Rica are benefiting from the rising demand for higher education that exceeds public supply of public institutions. Institutional proliferation is expected, however, until new offers appear, established private universities can temporarily raise tuition.
