PROPHE Summary (by Prachayani Praphamontripong): Brunel University and the private university of Buckingham
have announced plans to launch private medical schools in the UK. The
aim is to respond to shortages and accommodate demand from domestic and
international students (with confidence many families are willing to pay
fees of at least £10,000 per year), thus sharing the state's responsibility
in boosting more medical doctors. There will be partnering with London
private hospitals for students' clinical practices. However, there have
been only informal discussions but no formal applications have yet approved
by the General Medical Council (GMC). Meanwhile, four new public medical
schools are being established. The GMC treats applications of both public
and private medical schools on the same basis with annual inspection and
rigid monitoring.
For the full story (shown with permission), see Guardian, January
2005. "Private medical school aims to tackle staff shortages,"
by Donald MacLeod.
Buckingham remains the UK's only private university, rather conventionally
defined, and Brunel is a well-known public university. Their projected
creation of private medical schools is significant. Western Europe is
quite unusual for its only limited forays into private higher education
but this UK example raises questions about whether more niche areas, including
prominent ones, may arise for private higher education. As far as fields,
the most common niche for private higher education worldwide has been
commercial but numerous private universities have incorporated medicine.
