Private Universities will provide 50 scholarships to indigenous students in Bolivia

(Entry by Pablo Landoni)

PROPHE Summary:

A total of 406 young students belonging to the indigenous population will sit for the academic test in order to access one of the 50 scholarships provided by the 36 private universities operating in Bolivia. The Ministry of Education has been coordinating with the National Association of Private Universities (ANUP) the allocation of scholarships for four years; since then 150 students have entered the higher education system benefiting from the scholarships. Among them 70% are female. Two students have graduated and 15 will complete the requirements shortly.

For the full story, see El Diario Bolivia, January 13, 2006, "Universidades privadas becarán a 50 jóvenes de pueblos originarios."

PROPHE Observation:

Private universities in Bolivia are part of the national effort to provide higher education to indigenous populations. It could be interesting to review if the program is related with public funding for private universities.
