PROPHE Summary: The Universidad Privada de Bolivia will build a modern campus in the canton of Achocalla. With declared pride, university officials, joined by the mayor of Achocalla and the head of the Confederation of Bolivian Private Enterprises, point to the expected characteristics and contributions of the new campus. Claims include a particularly attractive and extensive campus comfortable for students, academic excellence, contributions to local and national development, and a special spirit-all cited as characteristics of the university main campus, in Cochabamba. For the full article (in Spanish) see, "Universidad Privada
de Bolivia (UPB) construirá moderno Campus Universitario
en canton Achocalla," El Diario, Bolivia, November 18, 2005. PROPHE Observation: The Private University of Bolivia is a leading university in Bolivia.
Building a new campus fits a growing pattern in Latin America and elsewhere:
bringing the prestige and other strengths of a successful private university
to additional places. Such extension could be a means toward quality
assurance, as compared to further proliferation of new institutions.
Private-public competition may be brought to new settings. In most countries,
private higher education arises and concentrates "disproportionately"
in capital or other leading cities. The university, and the new campus,
are visibly tied to the Confederation of Bolivian Private Enterprises,
which provides a backing that spares institutions from trying to grow
from just tuition.
