COMPEER PROGRAM and COMPEER FOR KIDS

COMPEER is a program that matchs volunteers with adults who are recovering from mental illness. A volunteer spends a minimum of one hour per week befriending someone who is lonely and needs a friend. Compeer volunteers are carefully interviewed, screened and trained. Students are encouraged to get involved in all aspects of the program, (i.e.: interviewing, helping to train volunteers, recruiting volunteers and making presentations in the community about Compeer).

COMPEER FOR KIDS is a mentoring program for youth aged 7 - 13 who are referred by the Department for Children, Youtn and Families due to risk for out-of-home placement because of emotional, behavioral and mental health issues. The program operates each weekday afternoon and provides the children with structure and activities in a positive, non-threatening environment. This is a volunteer based program that is a great opportunity for CPSP students to gain experience working with special needs children.
