ADAPTIVE SPORTS FOUNDATION (ASF)
The Adaptive Sports Foundation provides four season sports instruction
and recreational activities for individuals with a variety of physical and
cognitive disabilities. Through participation in ASF programs, students
experience an increased sense of personal accomplishment, enriched lifetime
sports skills and the ability to participate in activities that had previously
been inaccessible to them. Volunteers are provided with training opportunities
to help prepare them to teach this unique population.
During the winter months, volunteers instruct special needs individuals in
the sport of downhill skiing and snowboarding. Each student volunteer is asked
to attend four six-hour training sessions, held on weekends at Windham
Mountain, NY. After the completion of their training, students make themselves
available for help with lessons for a minimum of 10 days. Lessons occur daily from
December 26 through March 18. Lessons are held on weekends from December 2
through 17. Students participating in the CPSP program will receive lift ticket
privileges and other benefits depending on their level of teaching commitment.
In the summer, our program runs on Thursday through Sunday in July and
August. We run sessions of horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, windsurfing,
tennis, golf, archery, cycling, sled hockey, and more. Volunteers would need to
be available for a minimum of 10 days, with one training day before starting
work with our students.
