Eight Weeks Intensive Chinese Language Program Held in SWUFE

Starting from June 6th, 2016, eight UAlbany students participated in the Eight Weeks Intensive Chinese Language Program in Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) based in Chengdu, China. SWUFE is the UAlbany’ partner university. As part of Study Abroad Program sponsored by Center for International Education (CIE), Confucius Institute worked closely with the CIE and SWUFE to make this intensive language program possible this past summer in Chengdu. SWUFE selected two young but experienced teachers to teach students Chinese, which significantly improved their Chinese language proficiency.

In addition to language study, UAlbany students also conducted fieldwork in Chengdu to better understand Chinese businesses. Guided by the Chinese Director of CI Dr. Cao Dejun, UAlbany students visited six businesses in Chengdu, including a world class power generator manufacturer called Dongfang Electrical Group, and a brand new financial institute Chengdu Financial Assets Exchange. Students also visited some small medium enterprises (SMEs) in Chengdu; in each company, UAlbany students had the opportunity to talk to the CEO and General Manager, which significantly improved their understanding of Chinese businesses.

Meanwhile, SWUFE organized a number of cultural events and sightseeing activities, including the most exciting visit to the Giant Panda Zoo. UAlbany students enjoyed watching lovely pandas in a close distance. Students believed that this program was wonderful, and the time they spent in Chengdu was extremely rewarding. After the program, they had a much better understanding of Chinese language, culture and Chinese business.
