Spring Commencement 2009
Staff

There are many opportunities to take part in making this weekend both a positive and personal experience for the student body. Join us in celebrating the success of our students and exhibiting our UAlbany pride!

Volunteers are needed for both the Graduate & Undergraduate Ceremonies. There are various roles that need to be filled for both.

Jobs range from Brevet Marshals (below) to staffing information boots, transporting disabled guests, and assisting with the student line up and procession just to scratch the surface! Job descriptions for each ceremony will be available, in detail, on the Commencement Volunteer website. There will be a 1 hour rehearsal for all volunteers during the week prior to the ceremony. Non-University employees, student leaders, friends and family are invited to volunteer.

Brevet Marshals

Brevet Marshals wear purple academic regalia (which will be provided) and assist with both the student processional lines as well as assisting the Marshals in getting the students into their seats efficiently on the Entry Plaza. During the ceremony, Brevets will remain in their assigned section to monitor the crowd.

Compensatory time off
Compensatory time off applies. With supervisory approval, professional staff may be credited time off on a future date with no charge to annual leave. For classified staff, 2.5 volunteer hours become compensatory, but time spent beyond that will be reimbursed at the premium overtime rate. More information is available from Denise Heiserman and the Office of Human Resources Management.

Breakfast
Complimentary breakfast will be provided prior to the ceremony. Locations and times will be available on the Volunteer Website.

How to Volunteer

  • You must sign up online via the Commencement Volunteer website. A link will be available on this site as well as from the University main page.
  • The Volunteer site will not be "live" (accessible) beginning Monday, February 2, 2009.
  • On or after that date, you will be able to visit the site and view the various volunteer opportunities available and a detailed description of each.
  • The actual process of signing up is rather quick. Personal data and your choice of job for the event is requested.
  • Upon completing the registration process, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with the date and time of your event and job description. Further correspondence will take place via e-mail as the event draws near.
