Spring Commencement
Staff

There are many opportunities to take part in making this weekend both a positive and personal experience for our student body. Join us in celebrating the success of our students and exhibiting our UAlbany pride!

Compensatory time off
Compensatory time off applies. With supervisory approval, professional staff may be credited time off on a future date with no charge to annual leave. For classified staff, 2.5 volunteer hours become compensatory, but time spent beyond that will be reimbursed at the premium overtime rate. More information is available from Denise Heiserman and the Office of Human Resources Management.

Breakfast
Complimentary breakfast will be provided on both days prior to each ceremony. Locations and times will be available on the Volunteer Website.

Ways to Participate

Volunteers are needed for both the Graduate & Undergraduate Ceremonies. There are various roles that need to be filled for both.

Jobs range from staffing information booths, transporting disabled guests, and assisting with student line up and procession just to name a few! Job descriptions for each ceremony will be available, in detail, on the Commencement Volunteer website. There will be a 1 hour rehearsal for all volunteers sometime in the week preceding the ceremony. Non-University employees and/or student leaders are also invited to volunteer, so please encourage family, friends, and/or student leaders to volunteer along with you!

As Brevet Marshals

Brevet Marshals will report to the Science library Atrium the morning of the ceremony to check in, robe and receive further instruction. Brevet's will   wear purple academic regalia (which we will provide). After robing, Brevets will either proceed to the PE building or to the library lawn. Those at the PE building will assist Faculty Marshals in leading graduates up to the Library lawn, into the aisles and into their seats, keeping the lines in order and moving quickly. Brevets will be assigned to each line and will be positioned at opposite ends of each row to facilitate seating. During the ceremony, Brevet Marshals remain standing near their assigned section to maintain order.

To participate in this capacity:

Please sign up using the Volunteer Website. This site will be available March 10, 2008. There will be a link here as well as on the University's main page. Should you have questions or difficulty with the site, please email James Hyde at jhyde@uamail.albany.edu. It is imperative that you register online through the volunteer website so that regalia orders are accurate and so that we may follow up with appropriate instruction.

How to Volunteer

  • You must sign up online via the Commencement Volunteer website. A link will be available on this site as well as from the University main page.
  • The Volunteer site will not be "live" (accessible) until Monday, March 10, 2008.

  • The actual process of signing up is rather quick. Personal data and your choice of job for the event is requested.
  • Upon completing the registration process, you will receive a confirmation email with the date and time of your event and job description. Further correspondence will take place via email as the event draws near.
