In the continuing tradition of excellence, the Tenth Conversation will commence celebrating the triumph of structural biology with a wine and cheese reception on the evening of June 17th, and begin on the morning of the 18th with a series of lectures on: Structure of DNA and its drug complexes, Protein-DNA recognition, DNA supercoil and function, Chromatin, RNA structure and catalysis, Protein-RNA interactions, Protein structure and dynamics by NMR, Theoretical biology- ab initio to empirical, and the molecular basis of birth defects including tandem repeat DNA diseases. The keynote of the Tenth Conversation will be delivered by Nobel Laureate Philip A. Sharp of MIT on the evening of the 19th. In addition, the Tenth Conversation has scheduled two special lectures particularly to educate and instill a sense of history into our current crop of students: Professor Alexander Rich of MIT will lecture on the early years of nucleic acids in a tour de force personal voyage, and Professor Richard Dickerson of UCLA will provide a critical review a la a new synthesis on the crystal structures of B-DNA. The sessions will be punctuated by over 250 poster discussion papers from over 14 countries.
In behalf of the University, I invite you to join the celebrations and share with us the current developments in your laboratory in the structure, dynamics, interactions and expression of biological macromolecules.
In Memory of Bernard
Bernard Pullman single handledly founded
the discipline of quantum biochemistry. Several of the participants at this
Conversation have been at his legendary Jerusalem Symposia and the memorable
sojourns in the south of France where theory and experiments were fused
into a new synthesis. Bernard passed away in the June of 96. At the commencement
of the Tenth Conversation Harold Scheraga will tell about Bernard. To honor
Bernard, the Tenth Conversation will hold its theoretical session immediately
following Harold's piece.
