Cultural Supports for Empirical Research on Writing

Martin Nystrand

ABSTRACT

This chapter reflects upon the rise of empirical writing research in North America in the late-1960s and early 1970s, looking especially at how this new discourse became institutionalized in new graduate programs in both schools of education and departments of English, and at the intricate relationship between the new ideas about literacy development and the social and political conditions that nurtured their emergence.
