| The
Staff at the Career Development Center (CDC) is available
to discuss educational and career concerns and goals with
matriculated undergraduate students. Questions frequently
arise regarding career options for a particular major;
how to assess skills, interests and values; or how to
conduct a personalized job search. An appointment is required
for counseling sessions, which are confidential. To schedule
an appointment please call (518) 437-4900 or stop by the
CDC in Science Library G50. |
|
|
|
The
CDC offers a pencil and paper assessment as well as a computerized
guidance program to help with the career development process,
by helping matriculated undergraduate students discover
skills, interests, values, and possible career paths. Students
must meet with a counselor prior to completing an assessment
for the counselor to determine the appropriateness of the
instrument. Students are also required to meet with a counselor
at the completion of the assessment for interpretation.

On-Campus
Recruiting (OCR)
|
| The
On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) program at the University at Albany
represents a segment of the job market for graduating students
and those looking for internships. The opportunities available
through OCR are driven by employer demand and budgetary considerations;
some career fields and some types
of employers are well-represented in OCR while others
are not. Therefore, many business or technology-related companies
participate in OCR, whereas school districts or human service
agencies do not. Students seeking employment in those areas
are encouraged to adopt different job search strategies. An
orientation is mandatory for
participation in OCR, which is entirely managed online using
a component of MonsterTRAK.com. |

|
| With
the assistance of our office, various student groups or off-campus
organizations coordinate career fairs, as an opportunity for
graduating seniors or those looking for internships to connect
with employers and/or learn more about various career fields.
Career fair preparation workshops are scheduled in advance
of the fairs, so that students know what to expect and can
"work" the job fair effectively. Some regular career
fairs include the Delta Sigma Pi Career Fair in the Fall,
and an Education Expo and Job & Internship Expo in the
Spring. See our Upcoming
Events page for more information. |

|
| Located
in the Dutch Quad Penthouse, the CDC Midnight Express is an
extension of the CDC's Career Library for students to utilize
in the evening and on weekends. The CDC Midnight Express contains
computers and various library resources to assist students
with their career planning. Hours TBA. Call Dutch Quad for
more information. |
|
|
| Throughout
the year, certain standard workshops are scheduled, on topics
such as Resume & Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing Skills,
and Internships and Summer Jobs. The CDC accepts workshop
requests from student groups and academic departments. Certain
specialty programs are offered throughout the year, such as
"Careers for English & Communication Students,"
"Dining Etiquette," and "Breaking Into Business
Without A Business Degree." See our Upcoming
Events page for more information. |
Resume
& Cover Letter Assistance
|
|
In addition
to workshops, the CDC staff works individually with students
in counseling appointments or during Drop-In Hours to assist
with resume and cover letter writing. Both the CDC Library
and web site (see Writing
Guides) contain several resources, including samples.

Mock
interviews are available to students wishing to practice
or refine their interviewing skills. Mock interviews
last for 30 minutes and can be scheduled in person or
by calling 437-4900. For counselors to prepare accordingly,
students must present their resume and the job title
for which they wish to practice interviewing. Students
are encouraged to dress in interview attire to simulate
