Why
is Networking So Important? |
| You've probably heard the term "hidden job market,"
which describes the many jobs that aren't advertised. You
may think "if jobs aren't advertised, how am I supposed
to find out about them??" That's where networking comes
in. Having contacts can help you learn of these opportunities,
and can be a definite advantage to your job search. Think
back to your previous work experience - how did you come
across those positions? Did you know a friend who worked
there? A relative? Perhaps a professor suggested that you
get in touch with so-and-so? Networking can mean the difference
between knowing about or not knowing about an opportunity.
Aside from learning about openings, networking is also useful
for finding out more about career paths that may interest
you. |

| Networking starts with who you already know - this includes
friends, family members, neighbors, professors, and co-workers.
These people may represent a variety of fields. If they
don't represent any career fields of interest to you, they
may have connections to others in other fields. Building
your network of contacts from these folks and who they know
is how it all works. One easy way to build your network
is conducting informational interviews. These are information
gathering chats with someone in your chosen field to learn
about the nature of their job/field, training or education
requirements, necessary skills, and employment outlook.
However, in addition to gathering information, you've made
a contact that you could potentially draw from in the future.
UAlbany alumni are good resources, as is "cold calling"
people in various fields. |
