Career Resources for our Diverse Student Population
The following is a list of career resources that can be helpful for students who identify with specific diverse groups. These resources include career advice and information about workplace issues. There are some "Best Company" ratings that can help you identify organizations with the strongest commitment to diversity. There are also job posting sites. This list includes both general diversity resources as well as resources for specific groups.
You should also check our list of career events on our home page. This list includes events that are sponsored by outside organizations and often includes career fairs for specific diversity groups.
This list can never be complete because new resources are being developed for specialized groups all the time. Here are some suggestions for finding additional resources.
Professional Associations: There are professional organizations dedicated to different diversity groups, as well as subgroups within associations. Local chapters of these groups are excellent networking resources. WEDDLE's Association Directory provides a list of associations by industries and categories.
Advocacy Groups: Advocacy groups can offer resources for employment as well as information about discrimination and other workplace issues.
Magazines: Business magazines that are targeted to specific groups often have associated websites that include career advice. Many of them also survey companies to determine which are the best work environments for people who identify with a particular group.
Employment Websites: The above resources often include job posting sites but there are other websites that focus just on posting jobs. The International Association of Employment Web Sites (IAEWS) is an organization that supports ethical standards in employment website. They have a list of members that can be sorted by industry, geography or alphabetically. While you should always investigate a site before you post your resume, starting with IAEWS members helps to ensure they meet a minimum of ethical standards.
