Career Resources for LGBT Students

The following is a list of career resources that can be helpful for students who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, or Questioning. These resources include career advice and information about workplace issues. There are some "Best Company" ratings that can help you identify organizations with the strongest commitment to diversity. There are also job posting sites.

 

You should also check our list of career events sponsored by outside organizations. This list often includes career fairs for specific diversity groups.

Community Groups

LGBT Support Group at University at Albany - This support group will allow for a SAFE and CONFIDENTIAL environment for GLBTQ individuals at UAlbany to: Discuss and explore relationships, sexuality, health, wellness, identity, coping with stress, and many other topics. Capital District Gay and Lesbian Community Council is an organization devoted to serving the Capital District's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) community. Located in Albany, NY, the Council has been serving the Capital District for over thirty years. They provide numerous programs and activities including youth and peer support groups, cultural events, commUNITY (our publication), Capital Pride, The Rainbow Café, as well as workshops and seminars on issues of concern to the community such as health, personal finance and family/legal matters.

Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG) is a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 500 affiliates in the United States.

Career Advice and Job Postings

Echelon Magazine - Echelon is an online and offline gay magazine that publishes articles on GLBT finance, economic development, workplace advocacy, corporate diversity, education, employment and explores the ever evolving GLBT marketplace. The website includes an employment board and their bimonthly digital magazine.

GayJob.biz - GayJob.biz is an online community for both the gay & lesbian individual looking for a job, as well as the global business community seeking diverse job applicants. Employers may place job listings, search the database of resumes or advertise on their website. Job seekers can post their resume for free but they must register.


Discrimination and legal issues

Work place issues - This Human Rights Campaign site contains links to a variety of workplace resources for LGBTQQ workers. These include information about benefits provided by companies, how to advocate for LGBT employee rights and discrimination and harassment information.


Other Resources

Scholarships - Information on nearly 150 scholarships available to GLBT and allied students from both local and national sources.
