Subject: Prof. Terrence Maxwell appointed as Chair
Date: September 14, 2007
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Terrence A. Maxwell as Chair of the Information Studies Department. Many of you likely know Prof. Maxwell through one of his many teaching, research, and outreach activities, both at the University at Albany and throughout New York State. It is a pleasure to have him take on the role of Chair.
Prof. Maxwell brings a wealth of experience and perspective to the job. He joined the Department of Information Studies as an Assistant Professor in 2000, and has taught numerous courses including Information Policy and Information Management. Prof. Maxwell's involvement with UAlbany, however, pre-dates that. He earned his Ph.D. in public administration from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, and served as a Research Assistant Professor in Public Administration prior to joining Information Studies. These academic engagements complement a distinguished career in public service in New York State. Immediately prior to joining the University, Prof. Maxwell served as the Executive Director of the New York State Forum for Information Resource Management for seven years. In that role, he was involved in many projects related to health and welfare reform, public information management, and information policy. His wealth of experience led to numerous consultancies, both national and international, that helped the public sector make effective use of its information resources and provide better services to citizens.
In addition to being an Associate Professor in Information Studies, Prof. Maxwell is a faculty member of the Information Science Ph.D. program. He conducts research on a variety of topics, including the information public domain, information policy, intergovernmental information sharing, and management of information in organizations. The author or co-author of more than 40 monographs, reports and articles, he is involved with many research and outreach projects underway at the University, including the Intergovernmental Solutions Project in Rockefeller College and the US InterPARES project on electronic records. He has served as a member of the UAlbany Senate and its Council on Library, Information Services, and Computing, and as Eastern Regional Director of the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO). He is also a member of the editorial board of Government Information Quarterly, an important journal that bridges theory and practice in government information management.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Professor and Collins Fellow Steve DeLong for his service over the past year as Interim Chair. Prof. DeLong, who continues as Interim Chair of the Informatics Department and Director of the University's Project Renaissance program, will take on a new role as Associate Dean in the College of Computing and Information (see separate announcement). Under Prof. DeLong's guidance, the Information Studies Department undertook a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening the department's programs, including participation in a successful proposal for selective investment. I appreciate his leadership in this interim role.
During his time as chair, Prof. Maxwell will continue to bring his rich and varied perspective to our students and the world through his research and teaching. Please join me in welcoming Terry to this new position.
