Charting the Information Age

If you’d like to help people navigate through the flood of today’s traditional and cyber-based information to reach their goals, or, if you are interested in helping organizations manage, use and preserve the records they collect and create, the Department of Information Studies can give you the knowledge, skills and experiences to prepare you for these professional roles.

Inspired by 1880s library pioneer Melvil Dewey, the Department has evolved over the years to keep pace with the growing importance of information to society, and along the way has acquired a distinguished legacy of scholarship and leadership in the field.

The Department’s mission is to provide and promote education and leadership in the information professions through distinguished teaching, research, and service.  As one of three departments in UAlbany’s pioneering College of Computing and Information, it provides a unique blend of programs to put graduates at the leading edge of the Information Society. (The other CCI departments are Computer Science and Informatics.)

Working in a wide variety of formats, students learn how information is created, organized, represented, stored, accessed, retrieved, managed and protected in both traditional and non-traditional media. In addition, they investigate the uses and impacts of information and technology on individuals, organizations and society, including formal and informal communities, libraries, government, and business.

Great Career Preparation

The knowledge and skills gained through information studies are excellent preparation for a broad range of careers, including information managers, librarians and media specialists, and the many jobs in public and private sectors dependent on information processing.

UAlbany: Excellence at Great Value

UAlbany is the gateway to success in the Information Age. The modern, information-rich environment includes a wireless campus, a two-million volume library and a new Science Library.  Through its alumni network and its partnerships with state agencies and community libraries, the Department presents many opportunities for students to acquire practical experience.

UAlbany students live and learn in the state's capital, a vibrant community for study, activities and work. Here, numerous opportunities exist for real-world internships in government, law, health, finance, education, and business.
Albany is the heart of the eastern New York region known as Tech Valley, which has secured more than $13 billion in high-tech investments since 1997.  Its 33 colleges and 125,000 students are a mighty engine for the knowledge-based economy.

Students also find that UAlbany exceptionally prepares them for the global society beyond campus, due to the rich diversity in thought, religion and lifestyles that enriches its campus life.
