Informatics Creates Value in All Fields
No matter what your major is, informatics can make you more productive and valuable in your field.
Informatics is a hybrid discipline that involves the intersection of people, information and technology. It has been defined as the “art, science and human dimensions of information technology.”
Informatics is the bridge between technology and another specific domain, ranging, for example, from the fine arts to economics to health care. Its applications are often hyphenated, such as “bio-informatics.”
Besides applying technology to a specific field, informatics often includes a focus on social and behavioral aspects of information and technology.
As the home for the College of Computing and Information’s (CCI’s) interdisciplinary activities, the Department of Informatics draws upon faculty from its sister departments of Computer Science and Information Studies, as well as from other schools and departments throughout the University.
Great Career Possibilities
Graduates can look forward to excellent job opportunities, whether directly in the field of computing and information science, or by applying their expertise in information science to positions within the business, government, education or nonprofit sectors.
UAlbany: Excellence at Great Value
The University at Albany is the gateway to success in the Information Age. The modern, information-rich environment includes a wireless campus, a two-million-volume library and a new Science Library. Informatics students benefit from the many collaborative efforts conducted by schools, colleges and departments across the University. The NanoTech campus is the most advanced research complex of its kind at any university in the world.
Albany is the heart of the eastern New York region known as Tech Valley, which has secured more than $13 billion in high-tech investments since 1997. The region’s 33 colleges and their 125,000 students are a mighty engine for the knowledge-based economy.
UAlbany students live and learn in the state's capital, a vibrant community for study, activities and work which offers numerous opportunities for real-world internships in government, law, health, finance, education, and business.
The rich diversity in thought, religion and lifestyles that UAlbany provides also prepares students for the global society beyond the campus.
