Department of Informatics

Students Benefit from a Wealth of Resources

To be successful in the Information Age, students need a greater understanding of technology than just using MS-Word and Google.  Professional jobs depend on acquiring and applying accurate information on a timely basis.

For that reason, the Department of Informatics was established in 2006 to offer students a solid foundation in how to apply technology and information science in any field, ranging from science to business to the fine arts.

The Department’s courses complement all disciplines at UAlbany by introducing an Information Technology (IT) perspective (e.g., programming, online searching and database application) to any field.  This diversity of ideas teaches students how to think differently about their field and prepares them to meet challenges in their careers.

As the home for the interdisciplinary activities of CCI, the Department offers a minor in informatics that may be combined with a major in any discipline except information science.

Degrees Offered

The department offers:

  • An undergraduate minor in Informatics that may combined with a major in any discipline except Information Science
  • The Ph.D. program in Information Science

Types of Research

Students and faculty members are engaged in cutting-edge research on today’s important topics, ranging from human-computer interactions to cybersecurity, and child welfare and social change to crime.
