The Department of Computer Science is your choice. Computer Science involves the scientific study of algorithms (rules for computations) and the problems they solve. This leads to careers including programmer, systems analyst, network administrator, database developer, security analyst, IT officer, software engineer, and more.
I want to apply technology in a career in some other field (such as science, business or art)? What Department will help me?
A minor from the Department of Informatics will help you to succeed. Informatics is a hybrid discipline applying technology to specific disciplines, with targeted programs in government, education, business, sciences and the humanities. The Informatics courses complement all disciplines at UAlbany by introducing an IT perspective (e.g., programming, online searching and database application) to any field.

Is there a combined bachelor’s and master’s degree?The Department of Information Studies is your best choice. Information Science involves acquiring, organizing, retrieving and using information. It prepares students to interact with the users of information, it educates them for careers such as information technology specialist, records manager, Web developer, database administrator, and others. Some students enter graduate programs in library science; information science, business, and others.
Students of recognized academic ability and educational maturity may earn the combined bachelor’s/master’s degrees in Information Studies or Computer Science within nine or 10 semesters. Students may apply for the combined program at the beginning of their junior years or upon completion of 56 undergraduate credits. A cumulative grade point of 3.20 and letters of support are required to apply.What if I would like to apply technology to a major from another discipline?
The Informatics minor is available to students interested in the role of computing and information and the application of technology in their primary fields of study. Students in any major (outside of the Department of Information Studies) may choose the minor.
