When you log on to a computer that is a member of the University's domain (UAlbany) or College's domain (CASNET), the file shares you have rights to are automatically mapped through a login script. As long as your computer is registered on the network, you will be able to map these shares from CAS Computing. Alternatively, if you have file shares that are from outside of CAS Computing (such as ITS) you can use these steps to help you get started in mapping those drives as well. the brief steps below will help you in Windows XP and later platforms. Detailed step-by-step instructions can be found on our Tutorials page.

  • Right-click on' My Computer' and select 'Map Network Drive'.
  • Select a drive letter. You can use any letter that is available.
  • Type in the path for your share. CAS Computing uses these following guidelines for shares:
    • Faculty\staff home share: \\lincoln.univ.albany.edu\NetID

 How do I log in?

There are several ways that you may be able to log on to College machines:

Typically, College faculty/staff/students have a Windows AD Network account. This will allow you to log on to most networked University machines by entering your NetID, password, and logging on to (the domain) UALBANY. Logging in this way will allow the login script to run so you can access your network shares and printers, if applicable.

 On a Windows XP machine:

  • Username: Your NetID
  • Password: Your Password
  • Log on to: UAlbany

On a Windows 7 machine:

  • Switch to Other User
  • Username: ualbany\Your NetID
  • Password

Another way lab members may log on is by the use of a generic account set up for a particular area. These generic accounts are typically restricted to specific computers in the College. To log in you would enter the generic username (created specifically for your area/group), password, and logging on to (the domain) CASNET.

 On a Windows XP machine:

    • Username: Your NetID
    • Password: Your Password
    • Log on to: UAlbany

On a Windows 7 machine:

    • Switch to Other User
    • Username: casnet\Your NetID
    • Password: Your Password

Few computers may have a local account to log in with. This is uncommon in the College. Logging in a local account allows you to log onto the computer it was created on, specifically using a username (created for that computer), password, logging on to the local (this) machine. No network resources are available with sort of account.

How do I connect to a network printer?

When logged onto a Windows XP or Windows 7 machine, if you know the printer name and path you have access to, then you can typically quickly add a printer in the following way on-campus while logged in:

  • On a Windows XP machine:
    • Click Start
    • Click Run
    • Enter the printer name, such as \\p1\CAS4800
