Install or Renew the License for SPSS for Windows

SPSS is available at no cost to install on University owned computers in the College of Arts and Sciences. These instructions are for the concurrent license used by CAS, not for individually purchased licenses. There are a few limitations when using the no cost concurrent license over an individual license. If the limitations are prohibitive for your needs, you can purchase an individual license through ITS.

If you need the OS X (for Apple computers) version of SPSS, contact CAS Computing.

Limitations when using a concurrent SPSS license

  • The computer running SPSS must be on the Internet.
  • If the computer running SPSS is not on the campus network, VPN must be used to be able to run SPSS. Instructions are available here.

Considerations when installing or renewing SPSS

  • The computer must be connected to the campus network in order to install SPSS or update the license. This means that the computer must be on campus and connected to the physical campus network/Ethernet, not wireless.
  • If a computer has not connected to the campus network for an extended period or has been powered down or idle for an extended period, it may take some time (as much as a day), for the choices to install or update SPSS to be listed in Software Center. Keep the computer connected to the network (Ethernet cable, not wireless) and awake (monitor not black or showing screensaver) until the SPSS selections appear.
When you are using SPSS with the concurrent license, please quit the program as soon as you have completed your work. The College pays for a certain number of licenses and if that number is regularly exceeded, more licenses will need to be purchased. A user will never be denied access to SPSS due even if the license limit is exceeded.

If you do not see either of the above selections for SPSS, keep your computer connected to the network (Ethernet, not wireless) and awake (monitor not black or showing screensaver) until the selections appear in Software Center.
