David Jones, a doctoral student studying African
history at UAlbany, has received a Fulbright award
from the Institute of International Education. The
award will allow David to continue his research
on violence, gender, and generational conflict in
Namibia's struggle for independence from South African
rule. Through the award, David will relocate to
Namibia for a 10-month stay beginning in October
2008. During his stay he will conduct oral interviews
with Namibians who struggled against South African
colonial rule throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
Over the past two years, David has presented his
research at numerous conferences, including the
African Studies Association and a workshop held
at Oxford University. David also has published articles
on Southern African history in the Oxford Encyclopedia
of Women in World History. Prior to shifting
to African history, he wrote his Master's thesis
on race relations in Indiana in the early twentieth
century, and published an article on that subject
in the Indiana Magazine of History. A former
researcher at the Baseball Hall of Fame, David also
has written two books on baseball history.
