Sonya Guerrero from Brentwood, NY, is a junior at the University at Albany. She is a Human Biology major with an Education minor and is a member of the University's Honors College.
Sonya has worked in the CAS Dean's office as a work-study student for the past two years. She has been the recipient of the Spellman Award, a member of the Dean’s List, a Science Scholar and a recipient of the Clyde Frazier Scholarship from EOP. Also, she is a member of Chi Alpha Epsilon Honor Society, Presidential Honors Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Charles Drew Maps, a club that fosters student interest in medicine and the allied health sciences.
As a member of "Leaders in Residence" she is an active participant in the campus and local school community. She has undertaken community service projects for the Habitat for Humanity and volunteered for Compeer for Kids; an after school program for students with emotional and behavioral problems. Additionally, EOP has been a wonderful opportunity for Sonya. As a student assistant for the EOP Summer Program she has mentored students in English and Math.
Sonya enjoys teaching and after college she plans to volunteer for Teach for America Program along with obtaining a masters in teaching. She would like to go to medical school and ultimately become a doctor in pediatrics.
