MFA alums Justin Baker, Liz Blum, Colleen Cox, Tara Fracalossi and Ken Ragsdale, as well as Professor Emeritus Robert Cartmell, Instructor Melinda McDaniel, and Associate Professor and Art Department Chair Danny Goodwin are all included in the 31st Annual Photography Regional exhibition. The Regional breaks with tradition this year and is invitational only, curated by Elizabeth Dubben of Ambrose Sable Gallery in Albany. Other distinguished artists represented in the show are Roy Arenella, Catherine Chalmers, David Seiler, Stu Sherman and Laura Gail Tyler.
The opening reception for the exhibition is Friday, March 6 from 5 to 9 pm (in conjunction with Albany's First Friday series). On Monday, March 23 at 7 pm, Professor Goodwin will be in conversation with noted publisher Lesley Martin of the Aperture Foundation, critic and author Meisha Rosenberg from Salon, Bitch and the Women's Review of Books, and Ariel Shanberg, Director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock.
The exhibition offers a fresh look at a diverse group of artists who are some of the strongest in the area using the photographic medium.
Although these artists are only a small selection out of the population of very talented artists, they offer a fresh take on photography in the region. Dubben's aim in selecting this group of artists is to question the notion of what we normally consider photography. The virtual dominance of the show by artists associated with the Art Department of the University at Albany points to the striking influence the photography program has had on art and artists in the region.
