On April 22, 2017 (Saturday, Earth Day), the University at Albany held its fifth annual "Family Earth Day" event from 11am to 2 pm to celebrate Earth Day at University Hall at UAlbany uptown campus (1400 Washington Ave). This event welcomed guests from the community, with a focus on families with children aged ~5 - 18 years old. The 2016 event attracted near 200 guests from the community. The objective is to engage young people with activities and demonstrations that get them interested in and excited about the Earth, the processes that support our lives on the planet, and encourage them to get involved in sustaining these systems - all carried out in a fun way, meant to spark enthusiasm. The activities ranged from solar ovens to disappearing glaciers and bird beak adaptations - as well as "gee-wiz" atmospheric science demonstrations and even the chance to meet “Weather Friends” and participate in a weather balloon launch!
