Program Outline

The CARSS Summer Family Camp is a specially designed program for a group of accepted and prospective high school students, considering a major in the sciences or mathematics, to engage in a weekend of activities at the University at Albany campus. Up to two additional family members, who actively participate in mentoring the student, may join the student and also participate in programs designed especially for them. Activities will engage the individuals in learning about what a major in the sciences or math can potentially lead to in the future, and what support structures exist for a student on the UAlbany campus to help them achieve their goals. Seminars/Activities could include:

  • College preparation
  • Transitioning to life on the UAlbany campus
  • Financial aid
  • Why should I major in math or the sciences?
  • Career opportunities in the sciences and math
  • Meet some UAlbany faculty
  • How do I assist and encourage my student while in college?
  • CARSS program services
  • Campus tours
  • Recreational activities

This program is free of charge to all participants and includes complimentary housing and meals.

High School Students

"College…who me? I don’t have what it takes to be a college student.”

Have you ever said this to yourself? But maybe in the back of your mind you were thinking that you’d really like to, but how do I go about it? What’s it like? What do I major in?

Join us this summer for an exciting weekend as you explore the University at Albany and discover the opportunities that await you. Ten high school students and up to two members of their families, will be invited to be the guests of CARSS for the weekend right on the campus.

Get answers to your questions which might include:

  • How to do I get into college?
  • How is college going to be different from high school?
  • How am I going to pay for college?
  • What kind of careers will I have access to if I major in Math or a science filed like Biology, Chemistry or Physics?
  • What can I do to succeed in college?
  • Can I talk to a professor in the field I’m interested in?

To apply to participate in this program contact the CARSS coordinator, Mrs. Dianne Jester, who can provide you with detailed information.

  • Requirements for selection to participate in the program include:
  • Recommendation from your high school guidance counselor
  • An intention to major in a science or math field
  • C+ average or higher

Family Members

Behind every successful college student with a science or math major, is a loving and encouraging support network that usually includes mentoring and support by influential family members. That support network is strengthened when those family members are better informed of the career opportunities available to their students majoring in science or math.

Each summer, 10 Capital District High School Students, whose intention is to major in the sciences or math, and up to two influential members of their family, will be invited to attend the CARSS Family Summer Camp where issues such as the following will be discussed:

1)       College preparation

2)       Transitioning to life at UAlbany

3)       Financial aid

4)       Career opportunities for those majoring in math or science

5)       Assisting and encouraging my student while in college

We encourage your participation.

Please note that this experience is offered free of charge to those participating. Accommodations and meals will be furnished on the UAlbany campus.

Guidance Counselors

Capital District High School guidance counselors are an important resource in identifying inner-city high school students with academic potential and interest in the sciences and mathematics who are from populations that are historically under served. Counselors work with the CARSS staff to promote interest in our program with potential college students, encouraging them to apply for the Family Summer Camp and investigating more closely what the CARSS program and UAlbany is all about.

We are eager to work with you. Please contact the CARSS coordinator, Mrs. Dianne Jester, so we can share with you information on how you can assist in empowering your students to participate in the CARSS Summer Family Camp.
