UAlbany Professor Edward Schwarzschild Named Fulbright Scholar

ALBANY, N.Y. (June 29, 2007) -- University at Albany Associate Professor Edward Schwarzschild, Department of English, has been selected as a Fulbright Teaching Fellow, joining an accomplished group of scholars and professionals who will travel abroad for the 2007-08 academic year.

Schwarzschild, who holds a joint appointment in the New York State Writers Institute, will travel to Zaragoza, Spain, where he will teach courses in contemporary literature and American writing and visual arts to University of Zaragoza students.

Schwarzschild is the author of the novel, Responsible Men, which was chosen as one of the "Best Books of 2005" by the San Francisco Chronicle and was named "Best Literary Debut of 2005" by the Times Union of Albany, N.Y. His second book, a collection of stories entitled The Family Diamond, will be published in early September.  In addition, his fiction and essays have appeared in The Believer, Story Quarterly, Virginia Quarterly Review, The Forward, The Yale Journal Of Criticism, and elsewhere.  He has been a finalist for the Samuel Goldberg and Sons Foundation Award for Jewish Fiction as well as the Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  He received his doctorate from Washington University and teaches fiction writing, contemporary literature and film studies at UAlbany.

William Fulbright of Arkansas, the Fulbright Scholar program's purpose is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries.
