Paul Morgan, Sr. Receives University at Albany
2003-2004 Excellence in Teaching Award
Long-time lecturer and revered colleague Paul Morgan has been honored
with receipt of a 2004 Excellence in Teaching Award for Part-Time and
Non-Tenure Track Faculty. The recognition comes as no surprise to the
thousands of students that have been fortunate enough to work with
Professor Morgan in his 34 years at the School of Business.
"I feel Professor Morgan epitomizes what good teaching ought to be,"
wrote Saurav Dutta, chair of the Department of Accounting and Law. "He
is friendly, and well-respected by the students, he generates students'
interest in the subject matter, and most importantly, is able to impart
knowledge which leads them to success in his course and beyond."
Joseph W. Sheehan, a local City Court judge as well as a University
adjunct faculty member, added, "I am honored to attest to Paul Morgan's
impeccable integrity, to his untiring work ethic, and to one particular
trait which he displays with uncanny ease, his unparalleled ability to
interact with his students in a manner that is not only personable and
professional, but which also provides a sense of reassurance to those
students who have made inquiries to him."
Professor Morgan's teaching philosophy is that students achieve best
when challenged in a non-threatening, relaxed environment, always
knowing that each as an individual is important to the instructor.
Enthusiasm, energy and an interest in the subject matter must all be
brought into the classroom by the instructor as these are things
contagious and essential to the student's growth and success. He also
believes that one of the most important functions of a teacher today is
to be a mentor who is accessible to his students whenever the need
arises, and is ever conscious of the awesome responsibilities with which
he has been entrusted.
Several students who wrote in support of Professor Morgan's nomination
affirmed the effectiveness of his approach:
"Professor Morgan, Sr. was a teacher that I'll never forget. I have
never met a person with such character — you couldn't help but
have the utmost respect for him and the accomplishments he has made. He
is a model for students, teachers, and professionals. The University at
Albany is lucky to have him."
"Mr. Morgan is a highly effective teacher who is strongly committed to
education. He is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about business law. When
I attended his office hours, he devoted his attention to me and expertly
answered my questions. He is a wonderfully friendly, ethical and caring
human being."
"Mr. Morgan is very articulate and remarkably capable of conveying
highly complex material in a manner that is easily understood and
remembered. Further, Mr. Morgan is an unfailingly courteous man, and I
know that he has always striven to teach the importance of polite,
professional behavior in every situation to every student who has ever
passed through one of his classes."
Professor Morgan is a graduate of Mount St. Mary College and Union
University, Albany Law School. He was engaged in the private practice of
law from 1959 until 1974, when he began serving as Principal Law Clerk
to New York State Supreme Court Justices. In 1992, he became Assistant
Deputy Counsel to the Comptroller and Associate Counsel for the Office
of the New York State Comptroller. In 1997, he turned his attention to
teaching but continues to serve as a consultant and conducts research
for members of the legal profession.
He has also been honored with the Dean W. Warren Haynes Memorial Award
for Outstanding Graduate Teaching and is a recipient of the Outstanding
Faculty Award in recognition of his contributions to the disabled
student community.
