Program Overview
Companies succeed, or fail, based on the quality and effectiveness of
their employees. Today's successful firms recognize that to compete in
global markets, they must have world class Human Resource managers who
are active participants in strategic and operational decisions. Whether
they are reengineering the pay and benefits of the company or
implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) programs, Human Resource
managers play a central role. The Human Resource/ Information Systems
(HR/IS) specialization at the University at Albany School of Business
stands out from the competition in preparing managers to use
leading-edge technology to tackle today's HR challenges.
Overview
The practice of Human Resource Management is undergoing a technological
revolution. We speak now of managing not only human resources and
capital, but information and information systems. HR functions from
employee selection to benefits planning are being redesigned to take
advantage of advanced information technology. The HR/IS specialization
at the University at Albany is designed to prepare students to be highly
competent in traditional HR skills and in the use of information
technology. The recent addition to our teaching resources of two of the
most widely used software packages in the HR field (PeopleSoft and
Humanic Design) gives our graduates the hands-on experience they need to
stand out from the crowd in the job market.
The centerpiece of the HR/IS program is a field project in which
students take on a significant consulting project in human resources
and/or information systems. This 9-month project is done in the second
year and provides students concrete hands-on experience that is
invaluable in preparing them for positions with dynamic organizations.
Participating companies include Pfizer, Albany International, Pepsico,
Tiffany's and Towers Perrin, to name a few. Teams also work with
not-for-profit firms in the Capital District. The HR/IS specialization
at Albany is nationally recognized for its innovation, quality and
placement of its graduates. It is the only graduate program in the
country that provides an MBA with combined skills in HR and IS.
The Program
Rapid and constant change is a key feature of today's organizations. As
a result, the HR/IS program places a special emphasis on change
management in the curriculum. Through coursework and field projects,
students develop skills in general consultation, organizational
diagnosis, survey feedback, change management practices, team building,
process reengineering, quality of work life interventions, job
restructuring and strategic change.
The First Year
In the first year of the MBA Program, students learn the fundamentals of
business through courses in the disciplines (economics, statistics,
organizational behavior and management information systems) and in the
functional areas (marketing, production and operations management,
finance, human resources, and accounting). The first year culminates
with a globally oriented integrative case study.
The Second Year
In the second year, we shift to a professional development orientation
and begin our series of specialized HR/IS courses. We take a highly
team-oriented approach to developing professional skills. Traditional
areas such as HR/IS planning, selection, legal compliance,
compensation/benefits, training/development and change management are
covered in depth. Information systems concepts including techniques for
identifying system requirements, designing technology tools to enhance
HR decision making and implementing systems also play a key role in the
program. Our course work is designed to build the competencies required
to excel as an HR/IS manager or consultant in today's high-tech
environment.
With regard to human resource information systems, students learn
systems concepts, methods for diagnosing organizational HR/IS needs,
implementation procedures and the use of information systems as they
relate to each of the traditional topics previously mentioned.
Students learn to develop decision support systems using software such
as Access and Microsoft Office. The program also offers students
exclusive use of our dedicated HR/IS micro-computer laboratory, which
includes software donated to the program by leading vendors such as
PeopleSoft and Humanic Design. Vendors and alumni regularly visit the
class to provide customized systems training and to discuss the latest
developments in the field.
HR/IS students learn by doing. Whether it's building an HR/IS system
for the University or designing a major benefits campaign for a Fortune
100 company, students are involved in meaningful resume-building
projects. In addition, the program stresses key management techniques
such as consulting skills, total quality management processes, and
change management skills. By the time they graduate, students have
gained considerable practical work experience.
Field Projects
Field Projects are significant consulting engagements undertaken during
the second year by student teams with faculty supervision. working with
organizations ranging from Fortune 100 companies to small human service
agencies, student teams take on actual HR issues and are responsible for
delivering business solutions to their client. Projects run for the
entire second year of the MBA and give students the change to develop
hands-on skills, work in teams, and interact with executives.
Projects have included work in TQM, compensation planning, training
design, benefits compliance, business planning, payroll systems
redesign, employee surveys, job design, and HR/IS systems design,
development and implementation. Past field project clients include:

Comments from Alumni
As the Academic Year ends, and we move into summer sessions, I am struck
by what a vibrant, active learning center we are here at the School of
Business. While other departments and schools shut down for the summer,
we are busy teaching students, working on research projects, planning
for incoming students, developing new electives, etc. Let me share with
you just some of the activities in which we are involved:
"The focused direction of the SUNY HR/IS program on both the functional
and technical aspects of human resource management systems (HRMS)
provides a comfort level in the graduates that allows them to quickly
become contributive and proactive participants in our growing
organization. Also the reputation of the program and the success of the
alumni in the HRMS field build a high confidence level that hires from
the program will be a perfect fit for HDC."
- Frank Cancro
President, Humanic Design
"I found the learning environment with the HR department to be very
nurturing — almost like a family. The Albany program offered a lot of
application along with the theory. We learned strategy, implementation,
project management and how to manage client relationships. The field
projects proved to be invaluable. They prepared us for what it would be
like in the real world."
- John Garcia '95
Consultant, Towers Perrin
"Albany's HR/IS graduate program attracts high quality students who upon
graduation are well prepared to deal with the real life challenges our
consultants face."
